Okay I lied, THIS is my last post of 2010…

…but it’s a really, really, really short one. E. Kristin Anderson and Miranda Kenneally invited me to take part in the Dear Teen Me project, where a variety of authors write letters to their teenage selves with various messages – hope, encouragement, affectionate snark, you know, that kind of thing. It’s a great project, and I would have been flattered by the invite if I was less of a raging megalomaniac. Here’s my post, and hey, Happy New Year, y’all! Be safe, and see you in 2011.

Stuff I liked about 2010, or I promise this post won’t be all about HIS DARK MATERIALS…

Oooh, that's such a purty little imported paperback edition, iddnit? Yes indeed.

…although could you blame me? I’ve heard all the praise and had the books recommended to me a thousand times, but still I didn’t get around to reading them until now. I just plowed through all three books, however, and of course I’m now a shameless, blubbering train wreck. Incredible stuff.

So I guess my tardy discovery of Philip Pullman’s HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy is something I like about 2010, eh? This is very likely to be my final blog post of the year, so hey, perfect time for a recap! There’s been an abundance of purely personal good news this year, topped by the birth of my son, but it’s undoubtedly been the most eventful year of my writing life, so that’s what I’m going to focus on. Anticipation, or why a heavily scribbled-up manuscript might be a GOOD thing

I am NOT a robot. Not even a cool, spiky, Japanese robot like this one.

So I can now say with complete certainty that I enjoy the experience of getting a book deal. Big shock, huh? It’s hard to imagine any of us scrapping and clawing for a contract and then, after the brass ring is safely in hand, saying “ehh, kind of disappointing.” I’m aware there’s some danger that I’ll become a strutting, preening sack of overinflated self-regard – I’m a weak man, sorry to say – so I hope the people around me (in both the corporeal and virtual worlds) will help me stay centered. My kids are better at doing that than anyone. There are few things that keep a guy humble like a four year old girl’s wrath over being ordered to wear pants, for example. It would be a little silly if I didn’t break radio silence for this…

Are you seriously gonna quibble over the blurriness of the text in the foreground? IT'S A BOOK CONTRACT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD...

Greetings, people of the blogosphere! Salutations, citizens of the land of keyboard-induced repetitive motion injuries! Hola, amigos! Yes, yes, it’s been a while, and I’m won’t bludgeon you into senselessness with an overly long blog post now (ETA: I TOTALLY LIED ABOUT NOT WRITING A LONG POST) – my son’s with his mother in the other room, weeping, so I’m on red alert – but seriously, if there’s ever a day when I’m gonna at least make a sloppy, token effort to blog it should be this day. And if you’re even remotely connected to my online presence in other venues you probably know already that I have a book deal! I’m gonna be published! Wahoo! And you probably already know who’s gonna publish my book – in typical fashion, I’ve given it away in the picture that’s at the top of this post. Even so, just humor me a bit, will ya? Pretend you don’t know, if you’re willing. OH COME ON, JUST DO IT. Go back into the wavering mists of time with me… Continue reading “It would be a little silly if I didn’t break radio silence for this…”
